Jamie got home to find that Pete had brought Mediterranean food from a restaurant near SMC. As they ate grape leaves, tabbouleh, and Greek salad, Jamie told him about the events of the day. Pete absorbed it all without much comment—of course, Jamie had been talking nearly nonstop. He asked, “What’s on your mind?”

Pete said, “Aaron. I’m wondering how he’ll handle the inheritance.”

“I suppose that most of it is tied up in the house and business. Not cash.”

“Probably. I bet he’ll sell the business back to Adrienne.”

Jamie stopped, a forkful of Greek salad halfway to his mouth. “Do you suppose Adrienne knew that Paul hadn’t changed his will?”

Pete had been about to bite into a stuffed grape leaf; now he set it back on his plate. “That is a very good question. What if Adrienne just found that out?”

“And arranged somehow for someone else to kill Paul?”

“Maybe she just put the idea into someone’s head. Someone who’d also benefit from Adrienne owning Paul’s business.”

“One of her employees?”

“Possibly.”

“If she was involved, though, why would she hire us to find the killer?”

“She must not have been directly involved.” Pete picked the grape leaf back up. “Maybe she suspects someone she doesn’t like. Something to think about, anyway.”

Jamie nodded, chewing his bite of salad. “For sure.”
